MarylandChapter of HIMSS Explores the Challenges of Expanded Use of Electronic Health Records at the Annual Healthcare Information Technology Day in Annapolis
ANNAPOLIS, MD (February 17, 2011) – The Governor’s Deputy Legislative Officer, Carolyn Quattrocki,addressed the 4th Annual Healthcare Information Technology (HIT) Day of the Maryland Chapter of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). Ms. Quattrocki’s unique perspective on the future of healthcare information technology presented an unmatched opportunity for both the elected officials, as well as chapter members. Sharing with the audience her vision for the future of HIT, she said, “Maryland is at the forefront of the healthcare information technology evolution which will institutionally change how we receive our care.”
The day’s many events began at Anne Arundel Medical Center where chapter members were joined by elected officials and Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Secretary, Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, for a briefing on electronic medical records. During the morning legislative session, Senator John Astle (D-30) and Delegate Shane Pendergrass (D-13) recognized HIMSS officers on the floor of their respective chambers. The HIT Day program began with a welcome from Denise Reeser, President of the Maryland Chapter of HIMSS. Honored guests were introduced by Steve Fox, Advocacy Committee Chair for the Maryland Chapter of HIMSS, including House Majority Leader Kumar Barve (D-17) who also addressed the attendees.
Participants heard about key challenges from Maryland HIT leaders and conducted a panel discussion on the topic of workforce skills development necessary to meet the needs of the HIT evolution in Maryland. The panel was moderated by Douglas Abel, Chief Information Officer of Anne Arundel Health System, and included the following members:

Additionally, attendees heard from Lyle Fowlkes, Government Relations Consultant with the law offices of Alexander & Cleaver, on the General Assembly legislative and budget processes. Steve Fox was accompanied by Kathryn Whitmore, Advocacy Committee Co-Chair for the Maryland Chapter of HIMSS, in presenting an educational session on the purpose and value of HIMSS interactions with legislators.
The day concluded with constituent visits to legislators’ offices where HIMSS members discussed their key priorities as they relate to the implementation of electronic health records and the many facets and challenges of the HIT evolution in Maryland.
